Junior Corp Meets FDNY Rescue 1
By Lieutenant Jan Johannessen
June 23, 2008
The Junior Corp attended a drill with FDNY Rescue #1 at the 79th Street Boat Basin on the west side of Manhattan on June 21, 2008. The drill included two separate scenarios. The first was to recover a severely injured worker who received burns in an electric vault 30' below street level. The second phase of the drill was an auto extrication and involved the removal of a pinned occupant.
The FDNY guys were very supportive of the Independent Junior Corp and invited them to help raise the vault victim. Working at the drill for the FDNY was another Independent, Sean Mannion, of Rescue #1. Members of the Junior Corp asked a lot of questions and enjoyed this unique experience. When the drill was complete, the Junior Corp was invited back to Rescue #1's quarters for a tour and T-shirts.
