Although many meetings and much discussion was held prior, the first regular meeting of the “Independent Hose Company of Mount Kisco” was held at Whitlock’s Garage on Kisco Avenue on November 19, 1907. The Independents were incorporated under its new and permanent name, “The Independent Fire Company of Mount Kisco,” on February 3, 1908. Within three weeks of the initial meeting, the Company consisted of twenty-nine charter members; at the first annual meeting, the Company roster expanded to fifty men. Prior to the incorporation of the Independents, the Mount Kisco Fire Department consisted of two fire companies, the Mutual Engine and Hose Company and the Union Hook and Ladder Company; apparatus consisted of two hand pump fire engines, a hook and ladder, and a hose cart with 900 feet of hose.

In protest to the status quo, the Independents sought up-to-date fire fighting apparatus to meet the needs of the Village and the surrounding area. Members of the Independents insisted that “modern days require modern ways” and stressed the value of automotive apparatus and insisted that hand pumpers be considered relics of the dark ages. In 1911, the Independents purchased a Leon Bolle car for $400 and transformed it into a Chemical Engine, Mount Kisco’s first piece of automotive apparatus.

The Independents were first stationed at Whitlock’s Garage on Kisco Avenue. On August 15, 1925, the Independents moved to their new quarters on Maple Avenue, a station that was shared with the Hook and Ladder Company. The Maple Avenue station was home for the Independents for twenty-nine years. 1954 brought great changes to the Village and to the Independents. The railroad was relocated and buildings on West Main Street and Kisco Avenue were removed. The route of lower Kisco Avenue was changed so as to cross Main Street directly into Maple Avenue and a bridge was placed over the railroad tracks. Given this redevelopment, the Independents moved to the Green Street firehouse and shared quarters with the Hooks and Fire Police, until the Independents moved to their  present location at Lexington Avenue.

From the beginning and to this day, the Independents have proven to be innovative, determined, and aggressive firefighters and have strived to be at the cutting edge of fire protection.
