IFCO Responds to Person in Distress
By Firefighter James Tipa, Jr
August 23, 2010
On Monday, August 23rd Utility 13 and Bedford Village FD (Rescue 44 and Row Boat) responded to a report of a person floating on a mattress in the area of Lieto Drive. Homeowners at Diplomat Towers reported seeing people possibly floating on a mattress in the lake next to the Metro North Railroad. With the assistance of the BVFD's row boat, members of the MKFD, and a officer from the MKPD made several attempts at trying to locate the mattresses and possible stranded victims. Members of the MKFD walked down Lieto Drive into the woods and swamp trying to locate the scene for the row boat crew. Assistant Chief Tom Jackson (Car 2282) found the debris after searching the lake with binoculars from the top of Diplomat Towers. After getting a better location of the mattress the MKFD and MKPD found that it was only debris lying on the mattress which had probably been lifted due to the heavy rains early in the day and earlier the past weekend. Members rowed back to shore and all units went back in service.
