Firefighters Brave 15 Degree Temperatures to Fight 2nd Alarm Fire in a Downtown Salon & Spa
By Captain Eric Hartmann
January 20, 2007
Just before 10 pm the employees of Cosi Restaurant at 15 South Moger Ave began smelling smoke. Mount Kisco Police responded to the 911 call and as they arrived they found heavy smoke emanating from the 2nd floor of the building which is occupied by Richard Scott Salon. Chief Boles (2283) was first MKFD unit to arrive on the scene; he immediately transmitted a 10-75 for this location. Chief Boles instructed E-103 & E-104 (Mutuals) to report to the rear of the building and E-105 & E-106 (Independents) to report to the front of the fire building. E-103 grabbed a hydrant on the way in and set up in the rear of the building while E-105 hit the hydrant across the street from the front of the building. At this time a 2nd Alarm was transmitted for this location.
Both engine companies stretched 1 3/4" lines to the second floor, the Mutuals from the rear of the building and the Independents from the front. Both crews encountered heavy smoke on the second floor of the Salon. Due to the layout of the second floor with all its massage rooms etc, it made it difficult for the crews to find the seat of the fire. The Independents searched the front of the 2nd floor while the Mutuals searched the rear. The crew from E-103 found the fire in the laundry room and adjacent kitchen area; they were able to quickly extinguish the fire with their 1 3/4" line.
While engine companies operated inside the structure, Tower Ladder 14 set up on the A/D corner of the building and commenced roof operations. The TL-57 crew under order of the Chief cut a vent hole over the laundry room. Tower Ladder 57 from Bedford Hills was order to set up in the rear of the building with E-103; TL-5 from Pleasantville was order to set up on the A/B corner of the front of the building.
Zone 5 Cause & Origin Team was called in to investigate the fire; once they had determined the cause of the fire, additional overhaul and salvage commenced.
