The corp. has a very interesting background including playing in the NYC Saint Patrick's Day Parade, the Kennedy Space Center, Washington D.C., as well as Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and many many other interesting and unique venues. The corp. is also the only musical group in the world to have a complete set of Moeller Drums which were hand crafted by Gus Moeller in the early days of the drum corp. 75 years later the corp. continues to strive for excellence in both their musical performance as well as their contributions to the community. The current instructors Ann Demodna (President) Linda Duffy, Linda and Bob Hunter, Thor Johannessen, Ex-Chief Bill Stewart, and assistant instructor Gus Cuccia keep the drum corp. alive and well bringing in new members as well as teaching the corp. membership how to march, play music, and take part in ceremonial events. It is all thanks to the core leaders of the band especially Ex-Chief Bill Stewart and current instructors who have created such a successful drum corp. and will lead the band into its next 75 years. The Members and Officers of the Independent Fire Company want to congratulate the Mount Kisco FD Ancient Fife and Drum on their 75 years of service and wish them all the best in their future. They represent the Mount Kisco Fire Dept. as well as the Village of Mount Kisco with such integrity and professionalism. Thank you for your service and all you do. To commemorate the bands 75th Anniversary The Examiner did a piece on the drum corp.: Mt. Kisco Fife and Drum Corps: A 75 Year Tradition Posted on January 20, 2012 by Neal Rentz The Mount Kisco Fire Department Ancient Fife and Drum Corp The group has performed throughout the United States and has been in operation since FDR was president. The Mount Kisco Fire Department Ancient Fife and Drum Corps is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012. Bill Stewart Sr. has been a member of the corps for 60 years. Stewart entered the corps shortly after graduating from Mount Kisco High School in 1951. Stewart, who served as fire chief from 1985 to 1992, said recently a person does not have to be a volunteer firefighter to be a member of the corps. "We take them from 10-years-oild," he said. The corps, which is part of the fire department, has 42 active members, with some of them in their 70's. The corps' drum set consists of 10 snare drums and four base drums, all hand painted. The drums were originally created by Sanford Augustus Moeller, who was nicknamed "Gus" and were obtained by the corps in the early 1950's. The corps dresses in traditional Colonial American uniforms, featuring red blazers and a tricorn hats during performances. The corps has performed at many venues, including the World's Fair in Queens in 1939; on the "Good Day New York" television program in 1994; and in the1997 New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade. In addition, the corps' instructors, including Stewart, took part in the "Braniff Airlines Tour of America" in 1975. The tour included performances in several cities, including New York, Washington DC, Chicago and Dallas in only four days. In 2009, the corps performed for the 50th anniversary of Colonial Williamsburg historic site in Virginia. Trips are paid in part by corps members and via fund-raisers, Stewart said. The many trips the corps has taken over the decades are one of the keys to its popularity among members, Stewart said. The Corps has taken part in several musters over the year at various sites with other fife and drum corps. "It's just a gathering of the corps. There's a muster parade and after that each corps performs out on the field for about five minutes." Stewart said. The corps also performs in annual Firemen's, Memorial Day and St. Patrick's Day parades in Mount Kisco, as well as participating in the village's annual 9-11 memorial ceremony. Though the corps consists of individuals within a wide age range, he credits the veteran members for continuing the corps. "If we didn't have a group of these people, we wouldn't have the corps," Stewart said. "They came in the corps and they've stayed with the corps." There are no qualifications needed to become a member of the corps, Stewart said. "Basically, just come," he said. Shortly after school opens in September, registration is accepted by the corps, for those nine years of age or older. Members pay dues and are provided with drums and uniforms. "We're subsidized by the fire department," Stewart said. Stewart recalled that he when he was president of the corps in 1967 that he was warned by a fife instructor from Long Island, Charles Riley, that the corps needed to increase membership. "You have to do one of two things – disband the corps or start a junior corps," Stewart remembered being told by Riley. "We started a junior corps and the next year we had kids banging on the door" to join, Stewart said. One of the young members of corps is Katie Tipa, a senior at Fox Lane High School. She has been part of the corps since the fourth grade. "I started because it's the fire department band for Mount Kisco," Tipa said. "It just looked like a lot of fun." Tipa enjoys the trips the corps has taken, especially an outing she made with the group to Williamsburg when she was in the eighth grade. "It was an amazing experience because we met drum corps from all over. We all marched in a parade together," she said. "It was interesting to see the techniques of other drum corps and how they play and their song repertories." "I think word of mouth is a powerful thing, especially seeing this corps marching in parades. It's definitely something to look at and look up to and spreading the word definitely attracts younger kids," Tipa said. The current president of the corps is Ann Demodna, who has held the post for roughly the last decade. She became a member of the corps in 1978 when she was nine, following the lead of her best friend Ellen, who is Stewart's daughter. Why has she devoted herself to the corps? "Just to keep it going," Demodna said. "It's something for the kids to do. We all have ties to the fire department." Demodna noted that one of her brothers, Michael Boles, is chief of the fire department and another brother, Vincent, formerly served as chief. To encourage youths to join the corps, there is registration held every fall and youths can fulfill their high school public service requirement by being active members, Demodna said. "The kids want to do it. They want to look good. They do very well in parades," Demodna said. Practices are held every Wednesday night for two hours, from October through May, at the Mount Kisco Elementary School and the efforts of the corps members paid off at all nine parades it participated in. "Last year we won a trophy at every parade for best fife and drum corps," she noted. As a thank you from the chiefs, our bellies were filled from a great breakfast at the Coach Diner. We hit the streets armed with buckets of paint , reflective powder and a huge stencil. There is much more work to do but we got a good start on a project that will continue over the next few weeks. Thu, 04 Aug 2011 12:26:32 GMT http://www.ifco13.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=146 MKFD Battles Fully Involved Fire on Lexington Ave. http://www.ifco13.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=145 At 6:27 AM on Wednesday June 15th the Mount Kisco FD was dispatched to a unknown type fire at 88 Lexington Avenue. As firefighters pulled up to the firehouse it was very clear that there was a working fire downtown. Looking north from Station 3 the sky was black covering the downtown area. Firefighters quickly jumped onto E-105 and pulled up to a fully involved house fire located behind three multi-story occupied multiple dwellings. As first units arrived the Mount Kisco PD reported victims jumping from the second story of the two story fire building. A total of five patients were injured during the fire. Firefighters and EMS personnel quickly helped those injured down to Lexington Ave. where EMS setup a triage point. Due to the heavy fire load operations began as exterior and shortly after putting multiple hose lines in place went into interior operations. The MKFD had protected the adjacent structures and knocked down the heavy fire. Once the fire was put under control crews entered the building through the front door and rear windows to the second floor and attic where fire was still burning in the roof and behind walls. Firefighters quickly opened up and hit all hot spots. At one point the Incident Commander had the scene cleared due to a heavy odor of gas. Con Edison cut electric to the building and controlled the gas leak allowing the Cause and Origin Team to begin its investigation and firefighters to finish up overhaul operations. The fire was put under control and operations were in the overhaul stage 45 minutes after arrival. A great stop by the MKFD and great effort to protect exposures, assist victims, and knock out the heavy fire load. There was no collapse to any portion of the building and no firefighters sustained any injury while working. After the investigation the fire is believed to have started due to a faulty electrical system in the building. Victims (three adults and two children) were sleeping when the fire had broken out and had to jump out of the second floor window since the staircase had been consumed by fire. The victims received burns and smoke inhalation and were transported to Westchester Medical Center and Northern Westchester Hospital Center, we wish them all a speedy recovery. Thank you to the Mutual Aid Companies who stood by for other calls in the district Bedford Hills FAST Team, Chappaqua FD for standby, and Katonah FD for standby. The Mount Kisco FD was requested to respond with one engine (Engine 106), the MKFD FAST team (U-13), and later was dispatched with Rescue 31 for scene lighting. The MKFD engine and FAST team were dispatched for the working fire assignment (10-75) and were some of the first units on scene. A passerby had noticed the fire and called 911 immediately. Two residents were home at the time of the fire and were unaware that their home was on fire. The family was vacated from the structure safely and without injury. As crews arrived to the two story single family residence there was visible fire through the roof and heavy fire coming from the A-D side of the structure. MKFD crews quickly stretched hand lines from E-106 to the structure and pulled a supply line to feed North White Plains Ladder 47 with water. For a short time units operated solely on tank water due to a lack of a water source in the area. Engine 106 was fed water from two portable ponds (portable water sources) which were set up by the Banksville FD Tanker 7 and Bedford Hills FD Tanker 5. Armonk, Katonah, Pleasantville, and Pound Ridge tankers also participated in the tanker shuttle. Crews operated inside for a short time before the wind driven fire expanded throughout the roof of the structure. All firefighters were called out of the structure and went to defensive operations since the fire was out of control. Units used hand lines and a master stream from Ladder 47 to put the blaze under control. Firefighters re-entered the structure when deemed safe by the safety chief and incident command officer to extinguish hot spots and overhaul. The Zone 5 Cause and Origin Team conducted an investigation which is still being conducted. The building was saved and no injuries were reported by the homeowners or firefighters working on scene. A job well done by the Armonk FD and all mutual aid fire departments. The dispatch came in at 12:45 PM with multiple calls coming into 60 Control for a fire on Maple Ave. On arrival of Car 2282 (Chief Tom Jackson) a 10-75 (Working Fire Assignment) was requested. On arrival of the first due engine (Engine 105) there was visible smoke coming from the second floor and eves of the structure. On entering the structure the first due crew advancing the hose line encountered a Colliers Mansion condition (heavy amounts of furniture and objects blocking passages) which made it harder for firefighters to maneuver the structure and reach the fire apartment. As crews came to the fire apartment flames broke out through the door and into the stairwell. Firefighters broke down the door and quickly extinguished flames in the apartment. Meanwhile ladder co. crews vented the structure and put portable ladders around the building for escape in case interior firefighters needed to escape the structure quickly. The Mount Kisco FD had a quick response and made quick work at the fire putting it under control very quickly. Crews overhauled the structure and secured property for the homeowners and occupants of the building. During the incident passersby reported a smell of gas in the area. Members of the Mutual Engine Co. discovered a gas leak at 42 Maple Ave and on further inspection also found a gas leak in front of the fire building. The Bedford Hills FD responded with Rescue 10 as a FAST team and the Chappaqua FD and Ossining FD's responded to MKFD Station 1 (Green St.) to cover Mount Kisco for additional calls. Con Ed Gas and Electric were on scene to shut off power to the building and for the gas leaks on Maple Avenue. Chief of Department Mike Boles announced that based on findings by the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team Zone 5 the fire was started due to clothing, furniture, and other objects being too close to a radiant heater. Another great job and great save by the MKFD. A special thanks to our mutual aid companies Bedford Hills FD, Chappaqua FD, and Ossining FD, the members of the Westchester County Cause and Origin Zone 5, and MKVAC and Westchester EMS. Members of the Independent Fire Company and Union Hook and Ladder Company were in the middle of their fire company meetings when 60 Control dispatched the MKFD at 8:26 PM to 251 Main Street: Village Social Kitchen+Bar for a commercial alarm. While E-105 was responding along with TL-14, Car-2282 (Chief Jackson) arrived on location reporting heavy smoke and had 60 Control dispatch a possible structure fire assignment for the location. On arrival of E-105 and TL-14, the building had been evacuated and heavy flames were coming from the chimney. The crew on E-105 stretched a hose line off the truck into the building and members of the ladder assisted putting the hose line in place and extended their bucket containing members and equipment to the roof. Firefighters used water cans and extinguished the flames in the hearth of the wood burning stove while the ladder company dropped a ball and chain (a devise used to clear blocked chimneys) and cleared out the inside of the chimney. After clearing the blockage members of the ladder company used a hose line off E-105 and cleared any other blockages in the chimney. The building was vented and members of the Rescue Fire Police used wet vacuums to clean up the water left from extinguishing the flames. Firefighters rolled up the used hose and went back in service. This year all four companies were present giving fire truck rides for kids of all ages. The trucks rode all around town with their lights on and occasional siren or two during the trip. Also at the Green Street firehouse the Bedford Fire Department brought their smoke trailer for fire prevention and fire safety. This trailer simulated to be the interior of a home teaches children the importance of fire safety and what children should do in case their home ever catches fire. Another event the MKFD threw was the car accident demonstration. In this demonstration members of the MKRFP and some members from other MKFD companies used the Hurst Tools to show spectators the tasks firemen have when they respond to serious car accidents. During the open house the MKFD ran a fund drive to support the MKFD's future September 11th memorial and the MKFD Ancient Fife and Drum Corp. was also on hand to play for spectators and encourage membership to the drum corp. This year proved to be another successful open house and a fun time was had by all who entered. On arrival of FD units a sedan had gone through the rear of a residential property with people home. Luckily the driver only had minor injuries and nobody at home was injured ether. The MKFD used Rescue Jacks carried by the rescue company and used them to support the car until the car was able to be taken from the home. A precautionary hose line was stretched by the Independents and the MKFD stayed on location until the flatbed arrived. The driver had been in the parking lot of Mount Kisco Smokehouse when she was struck by another vehicle. She then went through a fence at the edge of the property and when she went to press the brake she accidentally hit the gas and went through another fence, through the property, and into the rear of the home. The Mount Kisco Building Department deemed the home unsafe to inhabit and the Red Cross was notified to relocate the homeowners. These drum corp. members that participated at North Eastern had taken first in second places in their events at the GDADCA competition in Bethel CT in May. For the fife and drum corp. the North Eastern is the highest regional competition and it is a great honor to be able to play around the greatest in the region and perhaps some of the greatest fifers and drummers in the nation. Though at the North Eastern none of the drum corp. groups placed they all played extremely well and a wonderful time was had by all. A special thanks to the Rivera and Tipa families who provided food and drinks and to Corp. President Ann Demonda and Bill Stewart who came out to support the members. Even though it was cloudy and cold for a September day the kids were still jumping off the diving boards and everyone enjoyed catching up with friends. Firefighters served others and their families'. They served burgers, hotdogs, chicken, deserts, and plenty of iced tea and lemonade. During the picnic families chatted, firemen played their kids in a football match, and the MKFD Ancient Fife and Drum played and gave their awards on the hill. The MKFD Ancients displayed their trophies from another successful parade season and handed out awards to their members. One of the awards handed out by the corp. this year was the Joseph Sheehan Award. This year Ex-Chief and over 50 year member of the fife and drum corp. Bill Stewart explained the background of the Joseph Sheehan Award and Joseph Sheehan himself. Joseph Sheehan came into the Independent Fire Co. as a young member and soon became apart of the MKFD Fife and Drum Corp. During his time in the corp. Sheehan put a lot of his time and effort into the corp. and helped bring the corp. to where it is today. Mr. Sheehan held so much pride and was the symbol of the corp. for many years. Sadly Mr. Sheehan passed away at a young age and with his passing the MKFD Fife and Drum in conjunction with the Independent Fire Co. created the Joseph Sheehan Award. This award is given to a member of the corp. with high participation and a member who expresses the pride and love for the corp. just like Joseph Sheehan had. This year the drum corp. presented the award to drummer and Independent Fire Co. member James Tipa Jr. This past year James had put many hours into the corp. and helped the corp. in many ways. This year's picnic was another great picnic and a special thanks and hats off to all the members who helped prepare and helped cook during the picnic. A wonderful job as always. Also a very, very, very special thanks to Ex-Chief Bill Stewart. Mr. Stewart has given so much of his time and energy into the MKFD and especially to the MKFD Fife and Drum Corp. Mr. Stewart has over 50 years in the corp. and has always held so much pride and love for the corp. Mr. Stewart has been in charge of the drums and he hauls them for the band wherever they go: parades, fire dept. events, ceremonies, competitions, to get the drums serviced, and to put them in storage. Mr. Stewart has been so faithful to the corp. and has really maintained the spirit and enthusiasm the band has today. He shows the younger members the pride and the respect the band deserves and he stands as a symbol or our drum corp. today. He always keeps the corp. on high priority and is always available to help the band. He is at all of our events and supports the corp. and the members wherever they go. Thank you so much Mr. Stewart for doing all that you do for the band. You keep the corp. moving and are the reason why the corp. is alive and well today. Thank you!
