George Nelson Rubin Sr., 99, died peacefully at his home in Mt. Kisco on the morning of February 17, 2020.
George was born on July 26, 1920 in Matawan, NJ, to Olga Loennies and Sven N. Rubin. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jacqueline, and their five children; George N. Rubin, Jr. and his wife Shelly of Mt. Kisco, John Rubin of Holly Hill, FL, James Rubin and his wife Jutta of Mt. Kisco, Thomas Rubin and his wife Jody of New London, NH, Nancy Adams (Rubin) and her husband Buddy of Holly Hill, FL and nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister Anna Cody and brothers Paul and Arthur.
George graduated from Matawan High School and went on to serve three years in the United States Air Force, where he was honorably discharged with rank of Master Sergeant. After serving in the military during World War II, he played minor league baseball in the Border League where he excelled as a star pitcher.
In 1948, George moved to Mt. Kisco, NY to live with his sister and niece when his sister, Anna became widowed and joined the Independent Fire Company in September of that year.
After moving to Mt. Kisco, he began working in the construction field with Mannion Brothers until his retirement in 1985. He also served as the Treasurer for the Laborers International Union of N. America, Local 235.
George was actively involved with his sons growing up, coaching them in multiple baseball leagues and served as Scoutmaster for Troop 43. He loved watching the NY Yankees, doing crossword puzzles and cooking spending many of his days sitting at the kitchen table searching magazines for a recipe and then generating a grocery list for his next culinary creation.
Most recently, George received honors from the New York State Senate for his 72 years of dedicated service as a firefighter with the Mt. Kisco Independent Fire Company serving as President and 1st Lieutenant. He also has a son, George Rubin, Jr. and grandson, Daniel Rubin in the firehouse. Before his service in Mt. Kisco, he spent 8 years as a firefighter in Matawan, New Jersey. He will be remembered by his fellow firefighters as a wonderful role model who inspired others through his dedication and longevity of service.
As the patriarch of the Rubin family, he will be deeply missed and remembered for his hard work, dedication, integrity, and deep love for his community and especially his family. All who met him can confidently say he exuded genuine kindness and caring exhibiting a quiet yet determined strength to serve others until his last day. George has dedicated his life to the service and welfare of his family and community his entire life.
